William J. Murphy, age 93, of Geneva, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2023 at his home with his daughter by his side.
He was born July 1, 1930, in Chicago, the son of Stephen and Vera (Harder) Murphy.
Bill was united in marriage to Patricia (Grimes) on November 23, 1957. He is survived by his daughter Sheila Murphy of Geneva and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Pat who passed away in 2014, his parents, and his brothers Edward, Stephen, John and Joe.
Bill graduated in 1949 from Calumet High School in Chicago, where he played end for the football team and participated in track, earning second place in City and second place in the South Section in the mile run. He also participated in inter-class basketball and baseball. He was an avid Norte Dame and Chicago White Sox fan. He loved his Irish music and was able to visit Ireland several times.
He joined the Air Force in 1951 and served for four years, ultimately becoming a member of the 810th Air Police Squadron at Biggs Air Force Base. He was a member of the American Legion in Geneva.
In 1962, the family moved to Geneva, where Bill coached Pee Wee football and was an assistant coach for the Park District’s girls’ softball program.
He was employed at Portable Electric in Chicago, before the company moved to Geneva from 1955-1975. He then worked at Allis Chalmers/AGCO in Batavia until his retirement 1991. He also worked part time at Sav-Way Liquors in Geneva.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2023 from 9:00 am until the time of Funeral Prayers at 10:15 am at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State Street (Route 38), Geneva processing to St. Patrick Catholic Church, 400 Cedar Street in St. Charles for Celebration of Funeral Mass at 11:00 am.
Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
