William C. “Bill” Buetow, Jr, age 85, of Florida, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born January 30, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William and Anna (Heine) Buetow, in a snowstorm so ferocious that William Sr. had to tow Anna to the hospital in a sled with the aid of their German Shepherd.
William was a tremendously hard-working man who cared dearly about his family and would lend a helping hand to anyone he could. William’s work ethic, simplicity and emphasis on fairness were plainly on display during his career at the Chicago Transit Authority. William began working at the Chicago Transit Authority in 1959 and elevated himself from the position of clerk in the Claims Department to the Treasurer of the Chicago Transit Authority, a position that saw him oversee the agency’s fare card initiative and saw him testify before Congress in 1995 in favor of eliminating the dollar bill in favor of a dollar coin. William was a tremendous patriot, and dutifully served his country in the Army from 1962-1964. William also impacted countless lives of the young men he coached in basketball and baseball raising his family, with Marge, in Addison, Illinois. William loved fishing, the warmth of the sun, dogs, and most of all his cherished family who are all heartbroken at his loss.
William is survived by the love of his life, his loving wife, Marge; children Linda (Jack) Gallagher of Florida, Ron (Flora) Buetow of Elmhurst, and David (Carrie) Buetow of Geneva; grandchildren Sean and Shannon Gallagher, Kristen, Sara, and Danny Buetow, Rosalie and Hattie Buetow; brother Robert (Judy-deceased) Buetow of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna.
