Sharon M. “Sherrie” McLaughlin, age 81, of Sycamore, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at her residence, the Grand Victorian of Sycamore, surrounded by her two sons. A proud resident of Geneva for nearly 40 years, she relocated to her new home in the winter of 2019, where she resided for the past five years.
Sherrie was born on May 17, 1944, in Chicago, the daughter of Alvin and Vera Abuja, and a graduate of Lake View High School on the city’s North Side. Family always took on a broader meaning for her—she was blessed by a lifelong bond with dear friend and “sister” Lois Dahlin, beloved sister Dawn Scaramuzza, and brothers Craig and Dave Caldwell.
In October 1964, Sherrie married the love of her life and best friend, Richard McLaughlin. They shared 55 years of marriage until his passing in October 2019. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and enduring memories.
She retired from the Kane County Forest Preserve in the fall of 2016, where she spent many years as an event coordinator, helping community members host events at Forest Preserve facilities throughout the area.
Sherrie had a passion for gardening and took great pride in maintaining the colorful flowerbeds in her yard. She was known for hosting joyful gatherings and memorable pool parties, sneaking away for the occasional Aruba vacation with Ken and Lois, and gathering for card nights with her childhood friend Pat and daughter Shelley.
Grandma loved supporting her grandchildren, Addison and Maddux, as they participated in various activities and sports events throughout the years. She took joy in watching them grow.
She is survived by her sons, Jay of Chicago and Mark (Elyssa) of Sycamore; grandchildren Addison and Maddux; siblings Dawn, Craig (Kathy), Dave; and many other dear relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Richard McLaughlin, and her infant son, Baby Boy.
Sherrie will be remembered for her resilience, her unwavering love and support for family and friends, and the joy she brought to every gathering.
