Ronald Fredric Podschweit
April 4, 1938 - September 5, 2024
Ronald Fredric Podschweit, age 86, of Batavia, Illinois, peacefully departed this life on Thursday, September 5th, 2024. Ronald was born on April 4th, 1938, in Geneva, Illinois, to George and Olga Podschweit (Fylling). A proud graduate of Plano Community High School in 1956, Ronald went on to earn his BA in Business Administration from Aurora College in 1962.
Ronald’s career was marked by dedication and integrity. He began his professional journey at Geneva Industries and Howell Company in St. Charles before embarking on a distinguished 30-plus-year tenure with the City of Batavia. As the city's first City Controller, Ronald set the standard for fairness, patience, and hard work, eventually rising to the role of City Administrator, where he left a legacy of respect and admiration.
Ronald was preceded in death by his beloved parents, George and Olga Podschweit, and his brother-in-law, Robert Miller. He is survived by his cherished wife, June Podschweit; his children, Matt (Mary Kaye) Podschweit, Rhoni Hirst, Jeffrey Hubbard, and Isele Phoenix Harper (Alexis); his grandchildren, Aubrey (Tony) Smidt, Emily (Simon) Dumont, Alexandra Hirst, and Kennedy Hirst; and his great-grandson, Soren Dumont. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Lana Miller, and her children, Rob and Julie.
Ronald’s life was a beautiful symphony of passions and joys. A lifelong lover of music, he began playing the piano at a young age and was a saxophonist in high school. Throughout his life, the piano remained his companion, and his home was often filled with melodies. Ronald was also a lover of games, relishing in Scrabble, Phase 10, Upwords, Dominos, and the Golf card game. He found joy in friendly competition, especially when playing with June’s mom, Margaret, and his granddaughter, Kennedy, who both delighted in besting him at any game.
An avid golfer, Ronald shared his love of the sport with his friends and family, golfing mostly with friends and always with June and introducing his grandchildren to the joys of the game. His love for learning was evident in his constant reading, with a book always in front of him and a mind ever eager for knowledge. He found peace in tending to his yard, working tirelessly despite the physical challenges of later years. As a devoted fan of the Cubs and Bears, Ronald's enthusiasm was unmatched—he wasn’t shy about turning off the TV when his teams were having a tough day.
A celebration of Ron’s life will be held on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024 at 11:00 am at Chapelstreet Church, 2300 South St, Geneva, IL 60134 with Reverend Brian Coffey officiating.
