Payson “Pace” Leo Harrington died on April 1, 2023, in Geneva, Illinois. The beloved husband of Nancy, his wife of 56 years. He passed peacefully after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Pace was born on February 28, 1946, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He grew up there with his loving parents Leo and Reba Harrington. He met his lifelong sweetheart Nancy Hollowell in elementary school. Pace was a graduate of Ann Arbor Pioneer High School and Eastern Michigan University.
After college Pace served as an officer with the US Army spending his final year in Pleiku, Vietnam. He was a proud veteran. Upon his return to Ann Arbor, he began his career with McDonald’s as a store trainee in their early years. Pace worked for the golden arches for over 28 years, in a variety of roles, retiring as a Vice President of Human Resources.
Pace and Nancy enjoyed their retirement years splitting their time between Geneva, Illinois, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Higgins Lake, Michigan. He loved to spend time on the golf course with great friends as well as reading, spending time with daughters and grandchildren, and woodcarving ducks. A long-time member of the Geneva United Methodist Church he enjoyed many years of fellowship and service. He was a devoted University of Michigan fan having grown up near the stadium. Pace and Nancy were able to travel the world including memorable trips to Switzerland, New Zealand, China, Patagonia, and more.
He is survived by wife Nancy; loving daughters Marci (Mark) Shumaker of Columbus, Ohio and Staci (Chad) Schiele of Elgin, Illinois; grandsons Payson and Ryker Schiele; granddaughter Hadley Shumaker; many loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gaylord.
On Friday, April 14, 2023 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. the family will hold a visitation at Malone Funeral home, 324 E. State Street (Route 38), Geneva, Illinois.
A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Geneva United Methodist Church, 211 Hamilton Street, Geneva with Pastor Rob Hamilton officiating.
Pace will be laid to rest at a later date in the memorial garden of the First United Methodist Church, Ann Arbor, Michigan, the church where he and Nancy were married.
