Ophelia L. Mella

Ophelia L. Mella, age 83, of Geneva, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Delnor Hospital in Geneva with her loving family by her side.

She was born on October 6, 1936, on the island of Masbate, Philippines, the daughter of Ciriaco and Fausta (Santillian) Latonero. 

Ophelia received her master’s degree in Education at the University of Santo Thomas in Manila, Philippines.  She first taught High School at Colegio de Jesus Maria and then later at Manuel Roxas High School for many years.  Ophie, as her friends call her, had a passion for music.  She was a concert-level pianist and church choir director. Ophie was a social butterfly who enjoyed a good party, dancing and lively sing-alongs. Most importantly, she was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ who never ceased to be thankful in prayer for the many blessings the dear Lord had granted her personally and through her family.  

She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years Romeo Agustin Mella; children Mary Rophelle (Tom) Foster of Geneva, John Roland (Lisa) Mella of Valparaiso, Indiana, Romeo Vigor (Mireya) Mella of Gilberts, and Roderick (Karenda) Mella of Antioch, Illinois; grandchildren TJ & Simon Foster; Gian, Allan, Tyler, Nathaniel, Sarah, Janelle, Chloe, and Kaeden Mella; brothers Paul (Inday) Latonero of New York and Fernando (Violy) Latonero of the Philippines; and many other dear relatives and friends.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Orlando, Rodolfo, Cherryco, and Olivia Millares.

Visitation for Ophelia will be held Saturday, February 15, 2020 from 11:00 am until the time of her memorial service at 1:00 pm at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State Street (Route 38) Geneva.

Burial will be held privately.
