Michael J. “Mike” Shevchuk, age 74, of Geneva, passed away Monday, March 3, 2025 at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was born in Berwyn, Illinois to Anthony and Margaret Mullen Shevchuk. He grew up in Cicero with his 4 siblings, making many lifelong friends there. Mike served in the Vietnam War at 18 years old with the First Cavalry Division of the United States Army. Sustaining a serious injury, he was honorably discharged and awarded the Purple Heart, along with several other commendations. After returning stateside and making a full recovery, Mike continued to support veterans through efforts such as the Wounded Warriors and the Gary Sinise Foundation, of which he was highly supportive.
He loved spending time outdoors and became infatuated with cycling, riding his bike through the Rocky Mountains and all over the tri-city area.
Michael married the love of his life, Maureen, in 1989. They met and fell in love at Nicor Gas where they both worked - the rest is history. Michael was an incredibly loving, compassionate father to his two children, Maire Cait and Ian. His mission as a father was to see his kids succeed in life and achieve their dreams, and he did not sit on the sidelines – he was an active participant in that success. From coaching youth sports teams, to instructing martial arts (Mike earning a black belt himself), he was always there to help wherever it was needed. Even a simple phone call, offering just to listen for a few minutes to check in and give comfort, Mike did not miss those opportunities. He recently become a grandfather, which he absolutely cherished.
Besides raising 2 children, Mike’s passions in life included cycling, enjoying a fine meal, laughing and sharing stories. Most of all, he adored spending time with the people he loved most, his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Maureen (McDonnell); children Maire Cait (Jason) Lucchetti and Ian (Laura) Shevchuk of Colorado Springs; grandson Thomas; sisters Rita (Al) Brinker and Margaret (Clarence) Walsh; and many more friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Anthony Stevens and Phillip (Jane) Shevchuk.
