Michael White Obituary

Mike White passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23.  Mike was a brave, determined, intelligent, and fun father, husband, son, friend, and coworker.  He dramatically defied the odds against an aggressive disease due to his unwavering will and determination.

Mike’s first love as a child was sports, supporting the Cowboys, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks, and Northwestern Wildcats.  His first sports memory was at the age of eight, watching the Cowboys play the 49ers in the NFC Championship with his father, with the winner advancing to the Super Bowl.  The Cowboys were winning 27-21 with less than a minute left when Joe Montana and Dwight Clark connected for the winning touchdown on what would become known in football lore as “The Catch.”  The tears were flowing that day, but the Cowboys eventually rewarded Mike for his loyalty with multiple championships.

Mike was fortunate enough to attend games one and two of the 2005 World Series, both exciting White Sox wins, as well as, a 2015 Stanley Cup game between the Blackhawks and Lightning.  Other highlights include attending a Bears vs Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium and the 2018 Big Ten Championship in Indianapolis between Northwestern and Ohio State.  Mike also attended White Sox spring training for nine straight years.  He truly enjoyed supporting all his teams.

On December 22, 1999, he met the love of his life, Karri DeYoung.  They were engaged less than six months later and married on September 22, 2001.  They honeymooned in Maui and did an extensive amount of traveling in the years that followed.

Life changed forever in October 2008 when Mike’s first son, Brady was born.  Three years later his second son, Bryce was born and their family was complete.  Mike couldn’t wait for them to move on from baby toys to sportsequipment.  Once they started playing sports you could usually find Mike coaching their teams, occasionally from the sidelines.  Both boys have had great success with their sports, including playing on multiple travel teams in both baseball and basketball, as well as Brady’s recent success in high school baseball.  Mike had great pride in not only their achievements on the field, but also in their ability to be great teammates and respectful players.  These traits apply to all facets of Brady and Bryce’s lives, beyond sports.

In 2014, Mike developed a passion for triathlons.  He started with a simple sprint triathlon to get in better shape and concludedwith a half-Ironman in 2017, which he considered the biggest individual accomplishment of his life.  He was signed up for and training for a full Ironman when he became ill in 2018.  His dedication to health and fitness was inspiring.

Mike is preceded in death by his father, Alan [2009].  In addition to Karri, Brady, and Bryce, Mike is survived by his mother [Helen].
