John J. Burns, age 81, of Geneva, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born May 23, 1938 in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Mary (Ryan) Burns.
John graduated in 1956 from Fenwick High School. He attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1960. He remained a dedicated fan of the Fighting Irish, attending more than three hundred games. In 1974, John and Ann moved to Geneva and soon became fixtures in the community. He will be remembered for his love of Geneva High School sports; in fact, John and Ann were founding members of the Geneva All-Sports Boosters Club.
On the weekends, John enjoyed spending time at various Geneva restaurants, especially Burger Local and Aurelio’s, where he could be found holding court with countless friends as a ballgame played in the background.
He coached girls softball with the Geneva Park District and served as president of the Tri-City Football Association.
He was a member of St. Peter Church.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years Ann (Cunningham); children John (Autumn), Brian (Trish), Kevin (Aimee), and Colleen (Douglas) Cuscaden all of Geneva; grandchildren Liam, Aidan, and Anna; Molly and Renner; Emma, Florence, and Grace (Aaron) White; and Theodore, Patrick, and Bennett Cuscaden; great-grandchildren Micah and Bosco White.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 21, 2019 from 1:00 – 7:00 pm at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State Street (Route 38), Geneva.
Celebration of Funeral Mass will be held Monday, July 22 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva at 10:30 am with Father Jonathan Bakkelund Celebrant.
Burial will be held privately.
