John H. Ugo, age 83, was a recent Geneva resident, formerly of Homewood for 48 years, and Chicago's Roseland neighborhood. He was a graduate of Holy Rosary Catholic Grammar School, class of 1955, and Mendel Catholic High School, class of 1959.
He was employed by Sherwin Williams Paint Company as a Lab Technician. John competed in Chicagoland's A-Level 16-inch softball league on The Hustlers as a “hot-handed” third baseman. He later graduated from Western Michigan University, class of 1970, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He earned a Professional Engineering Certificate in 1976. After 27 years, he retired from Commonwealth Edison in 1999, working as a field forensic electrical engineer, investigating and troubleshooting failed transformers throughout Chicagoland. He was also a veteran of the Air National Guard, serving for six years as an aircraft mechanic.
John was an avid Chicago sports fan. In addition to traveling, he enjoyed physical fitness activities including gym workouts, running 10Ks, biking, skiing, and hiking. His curiosity about how things work led to his ability to tackle any home improvement project and to repair and restore antique clocks and Lionel trains.
His lifelong passion for model trains resulted in his detailed, multilevel train layout. John also enjoyed making wine and grappa with his friends.
He was the husband for 55 years of Linda (née Halenar). Loving father of John (Laura) Ugo and Laura (Matthew) Ross. Proud grandfather of Johnathan, Jackson, and Jenna Ugo, and Anthony, Dominic, and Evelyn Ross. Son of the late Angeline (née Tribbia) and John Ugo. Brother of Frances (Albert) Fanscali and the late Joseph (Johanna Conlon) Ugo. Brother-in-law of the late Daniel Halenar. He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a friend to many.
