John D. O'Brien

John Dennis “Jack” O’Brien, age 82, of Geneva, passed away peacefully at home on June 4, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born May 26, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John Raymond and Anne Catherine (Reynolds) O’Brien. Jack was the fourth of ten boys, he had nine brothers: Patrick, Michael, Terry, Danny, Kevin, Brian, Dennis, Kelly, Casey.

Jack proudly served his country as a Vietnam Veteran, carrying with him a deep sense of duty, resilience, and patriotism throughout his life. Jack shared a loving marriage with his wife, Susan O’ Brien. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.  While he loved all of his family dearly, nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his grandchildren. He took immense pride in their relationships and treasured every moment he spent with them.  

Jack found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He had a passion for gardening. His backyard was a special place where he enjoyed observing the squirrels and birds that visited daily, often treating them as part of the family. He was also a devoted dog lover whose faithful companions brought him comfort, companionship, and joy throughout the years.  

Those who knew Jack will remember his kindness, quiet strength, sense of humor, and wavering love for the people and animals he cared about.

He is survived by his wife, Susan O'Brien of Geneva; his children, Michael Gabel, Marty Gabel, Timmy (Julie) Gabel and Sara (Ryan) Lewis; grandchildren Emma Gabel, Dylan, Jonathan, Caleb, Aiden Lewis, Leah Lewis, and Abby Hogan; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Patrick, Daniel, and Casey O’Brien.

A visitation for John will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 9:00 am until the time of his funeral service at 11:00 am at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State Street, Geneva.

Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Geneva.
