Jeanne T. Hughes, age 94, of Geneva, passed away peacefully Monday, January 10, 2022 at GreenFields of Geneva.
She was born September 19, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Joseph J. and Claire (McAllister) Higgins. The family later moved to Chicago and Jeanne graduated from Hyde Park High School. She worked as a bank teller until marrying John Hughes and settling down to have a family.
Jeanne is survived by her daughter Carole (Michael) Hennessy of Chicago; grandchildren Matthew (Pamela) and Jonathan; great grandchildren Carter and Justin; and many other dear relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband John, who passed away in 2021.
Jeanne loved her family, books, movies, gardening, shopping and (briefly) tennis. Always the gracious and generous hostess to all who visited her home, she made sure you were comfortable and well served with good food and drinks. She was particularly fond of cats and fed many that visited their home in Taos, New Mexico. Over the years, she also enjoyed her volunteer work, which included serving as a Girl Scout leader, an office secretary at St. Ailbe’s Grade School in Chicago, and various roles at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, Harvey.
Celebration of Funeral Mass for Jeanne will be held Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 12:00 pm at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N State St, Chicago, IL 60654, with Father Joseph Tito, Celebrant. Parking is available in the garage located at 14 W. Superior Street.
