Griselda Cuevas Obituary

Griselda Cuevas, age 69, of Geneva, passed away at her home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.

Griselda was born on March 20, 1954, in Mexico, the daughter of Jose Gonzalez Ochoa and Maria Isabella Zepeda Novoa.

Griselda met the love of her life, Efrain, at 13 years old in San Juan de la Montaña where they grew up. They got married on December 8, 1974 and moved from Mexico to Aurora in 1976, with their 5-month-old daughter and a son in her womb and the clothes on their backs. Together they built a beautiful life full of love with their children. When raising their kids, they worked side by side as a team to make sure that someone would always be home while the other one worked. In 1991, they built their current home in Geneva and in 2020, they built their dream home in Mexico large enough to fit the whole family. They treasured spending time together and enjoyed spending time between the 2 homes with family.

She was first diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and she fought an amazing fight. Griselda means “Great Warrior". She was so giving, always putting others before herself. She would share pictures of her flowers before a picture of herself. Spring was her favorite time of year and would plant as many flowers as she could. She, also, was always going above and beyond during the holiday season.

Griselda kept busy with many activities. She loved knitting blankets, tablecloths, doll clothes, dresses for her granddaughters and crocheting scarves and hats for friends and family. She would look at a picture and was able to replicate it with no pattern or direction. She also loved gardening; had the most beautiful flowers, loved taking care of people, loved cooking; Puerto Rican rice, tamales, enchiladas, pozole, pancakes; these were just some of the delicious meals she’d make. She loved to teach her grandkids how to make authentic Mexican foods.

Griselda is survived by her husband Efrain; children Claudia Cuevas of Geneva, Efrain Jr. (Helen) Cuevas of California, Ivan (Rebecca) Cuevas of DeKalb; grandchildren Gabriel, Sophia Heins-Cuevas and Isabella Cuevas, Luna and Luca Cuevas; siblings Salvador (Martha) Gonzalez, Patricia (Miguel)Rabago-Gonzalez, Maria Elena Gonzalez, Roberto (Monica) Gonzalez of Oswego, and Rafael Gonzalez.

She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, three siblings and her nephew.
