Eugene B. "Gene" Waszak

Eugene B. “Gene” Waszak, age 97, of Downers Grove, passed away, Saturday, November 22, 2025 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 23, 1928, in Chicago, the son of John and Eleanore (Filipiak) Waszak.

Gene joined the United States Navy at age 16 and served in WW2.  After the service, he owned Art’s fishery in Chicago, but his love was horses.  In 1965 he started his horse business and became an owner, trainer, and driver of Standard Bred Harness Racehorses. While still racing, in the early 80’s, he became part of Wasz’s Resort & Marina, a family business.

He is the proud father of sons John (Kathy) of Mundelein and Paul (Jaunita) of Antioch; eight grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and other dear relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Rosalie, grandson Paul, great granddaughter Margaret Sloan, and his parents.

A visitation for Gene will be held Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 10:30 am until the time of his Funeral Mass at 11:30 am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 820 Division Street, Lisle with Rev. James Radek celebrant.

Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Calumet City.
