Edward P. Evert, Jr. Obituary

Edward “Ed” Paul Evert was born into eternal life on January 17th, 2022, surrounded by his beloved wife and treasured daughters, after 82 wonderful years on this earth.

He was born April 19, 1939, in Michigan City, Indiana, the son of Edward Sr. and Alice (née Sheehan) Evert. The family soon moved to Chicago, where Ed graduated from St. Ailbe’s and St. Ignatius High School.  He received both his undergraduate and his master’s degrees from the University of Detroit.

Ed started his working life at a young age and each job, whether delivering papers with his brother, being an Andy Frain usher, or working for the railroad, led to years of stories and fond memories.  As an usher he saw the greats play and met many of them.  One of his greatest thrills was earning money while watching his beloved White Sox in the 1959 World Series. Ed had a passion for railroading: he worked for the New York Central, the Milwaukee Road, and then spent 22 years at the Chicago & Northwestern.

Due to the profound impact that the Jesuits had on Ed during high school (what he called his “most formative years”) and his commitment to give back, in 1997 Ed joined his Alma Mater as a Major Gifts Officer: a labor of love that he continued until his passing.

Nothing gave Ed more pleasure than his family. He and Colleen were blessed to be able to travel to many corners of the world - with Ireland topping the list. When not traveling abroad, Ed enjoyed time with his daughters and grandkids, whether in Oregon or Chicago.

Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Colleen (née Finnerty); daughters Kate Evert (Joe Sheils) of Chicago and Jennifer Evert (Paul Diller) of Wilsonville, Oregon.  He was the proud “Opa” to four grandchildren: Margaret Rose and Edward “Ted” Sheils, and Amos Cotter and Harold “Harry” Julius Diller.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Geoffrey (the late Linda) Evert and Carol (Rich) Fox.

He will be missed by his brothers and sisters in law, many nieces and nephews, friends, and colleagues.

A visitation for Ed will be held Sunday, January 23, 2022 from 10 am until the time of his Funeral Mass at Noon at The Church of the Holy Family, 1080 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago. Parking is available on Roosevelt Road and in the Roosevelt/Racine parking lot.
