Casey Kenan O’Brien, aged 64, of West Palm Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on July 3rd, 2024 after a brief hospital stay.
Casey was born on November 27, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois to John Raymond and Anne Catherine O’Brien. He was the youngest of ten sons born to the O’Brien’s, prompting the Chicago Tribune to run an article highlighting this amazing fact. Casey grew up in Oak Park, Illinois and then moved to St, Charles, Illinois in 1969, where he graduated from St. Charles High School in 1977.
Casey spent most of his time working in the restaurant industry, notably as the co-owner and manager of O’Brien’s Pub and Grill in Batavia, IL along with his wife, Laura Basil. He was also an accomplished musician, playing both guitar and keyboards and enjoyed his many years playing with his brother, Kevin O’Brien in the O’Brien Brothers Band in and around the Chicago area. One of Casey’s musical highlights was when he performed with international artist, Dave Mason during a chance meeting in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. He was also thrilled to have the opportunity to perform in Galway, Ireland in 2017. Casey was very passionate about The Beatles and it was his goal to learn every song they ever wrote, a goal which he accomplished. Casey would also often delight audiences with his solo acoustic and vocal rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, bringing down the house every time he performed it!
Casey was a friendly and generous person who would give you the shirt off his back if he could. Throughout his life, Casey had a soft spot for people going through misfortune and helped those people the best he could. While owning O’Briens Pub and Grill, he learned a homeless person was living under a nearby picnic table. Casey would often leave her a hot meal. He gave people jobs, a place to live temporarily and did anything he could to help people and give them a second chance. He frequently held fundraisers to help charitable organizations in the community. For several years he would also close the restaurant and host his entire, ever-growing family (over 140 people) for the annual O’Brien Christmas party.
Casey was a playful prankster and you had to be on your toes lest you become his latest victim. His good nature and positive joyful spirit were infectious, leaving an indelible mark on all those he met. Casey will always be fondly remembered as the fun-loving, youngest O’Brien brother who could brighten up anybody’s day with a song and a smile. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Casey was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Anne, and his oldest brother, Pat (Rose).
Casey is survived by his eight brothers Mike (Nancy), Terry (Kathleen), Jack (Susan), Kevin (Patty), Danny (Patti), Brian (Mari An), Dennis (Kathi), and Kelly (Connie) and his loving friend and former wife Laura Basil. He is also survived by countless cousins, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends.
Casey will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva, Illinois. The burial will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future time. The date and location will be provided once they are determined.
