Philomena (Ryan) Smith

Philomena Smith, age 89, of Geneva, formerly of Elk Grove Village, passed away Monday, April 1, 2019 surrounded by her loving family at her daughter’s home.

She was born April 9, 1929 in Kilnacask, Golden, County Tipperary, Ireland, the daughter of Matthew and Annie (O’Gorman) Ryan.

Philomena worked as a nurse at Community Nursing Service in Carol Stream for many years.  She also worked for Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.  She was an avid reader, loved to travel and tend to her garden.  She would never take a pass on enjoying a cup of hot tea.  Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family and she will be dearly missed.  Her main focus and joy was spending time with her grandchildren and attending their school events, activities and sporting events.  She will continue on with them as their guardian angel. 

She is survived by her children Elizabeth (Ken) Weinberg of Geneva and George Smith (Molly) of St. Charles; grandchildren Ryan, Liam, and Kelly Smith and Grace Weinberg; loving brother Matthew in Ireland; and many other cherished nieces, nephews, dear relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings John, Michael, Mary B., Ellen, Margaret and Sr. Mary Ita; and her devoted husband George who passed away in 1999.

A visitation will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019 from 1:30 pm until the time of her funeral mass at 2:30 pm at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva with Father Jonathan Bakkelund, celebrant.

Burial will be held privately at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 would be appreciated.
