Welcome to the memorial page for

Muriel "Mickey" (Sokol) Koenig

June 10, 1928 ~ February 15, 2013 (age 84) 84 Years Old

On Friday, February 15th, Muriel “Mickey” (Sokol) Koenig’s’ heart finally lost its long battle for life, as all of our hearts eventually do. But in her 84 year effort of life, which includes 61 years of marriage, she stood as a symbol of what a person with desire, commitment and love could accomplish.

Born June 10th, 1928 she soon found herself living in Chicago, Illinois. Upon reaching her teen years she attended Schurz High School, where she eventually became head cheerleader for one of the largest high schools in Chicago during World War II.

After graduating, she worked for the state government for a couple of years before meeting Frank Koenig at Byrnes’ Tap on St Patrick’s Day in 1950. On September 29th, 1951 they married.

That union led to five children: Kurt, Mark, Ruth, Brad and Mary; six grandchildren: (Mark) Kara, Kade and Nick, (Ruth) Katie and Clint Vatterodt, and Austin, (Brad) Chase and Trey and four great-grandchildren: (Kara) Logan, Luke and Avery and (Kade) Hudson.

While raising her children Mickey embraced every challenge that came her way. When she moved downstate to Washington, Illinois, the city girl learned how to drive in her 30’s. She took up golf and bowling, becoming good at both. She was a fantastic home cook, an accomplished seamstress and was a natural when it came to interior decoration.

She accomplished all this while raising five future college graduates (four of which were Division One athletes) with a husband whose work included significant travel.

Her compensation was the love and appreciation of her children and Frank. She never lacked for gifts from her husband. They went out when they could, loved to dance and had great parties. Later, as he rose to senior executive positions, they traveled extensively, visiting many resorts and countries around the world. Her children always remembered her birthday and anniversary and always made the effort to be with her for the holidays.

Living in Geneva, Illinois since 1978, she enjoyed the Fox Valley area and the shopping, particularly the Little Traveler, and the Merra-Lee shops. When Frank retired they both were able to travel more and visit their family and friends.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 8:00 pm at Malone Funeral Home 324 East State Street (Route 38) Geneva.

Burial will be held privately.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, February 19, 2013 from 5 to 8 pm at the funeral home.
