David Burton Obituary

David J. Burton, age 82, passed away Friday, March 1, 2024, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 29, 1941, in West Chicago, IL, the son of Joffre “Joe”and Anna (Foxen) Burton.

Dave attended St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, Texas, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on physical education.  He went on to receive his Master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.  Dave was a social studies teacher at Gary school in West Chicago prior to pursuing a career in educational administration.  He was made Assistant Principal, and then Principal, of West Chicago Middle School until his retirement in 1997.  After working for a time as a class trip chaperone with Educational Tours, Dave found the part-time job of his dreams as Head Golf Ranger at St. Andrews Golf Club in West Chicago.  For over 20 years after retirement, Dave enjoyed his job as Head Ranger and would have worked there many more years if his health had permitted.

Dave was a lifelong sports fan, especially the Chicago Cubs and Oklahoma Sooners.  He enjoyed nothing more than watching sports or talking sports with family, friends, and even strangers.  In his later years, Dave enjoyed doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, reading, and visiting with friends and family.

He is survived by his daughter Monica (Jim) Thing of Elburn; granddaughter Morgan (Brendan) Casey of Chicago; siblings Patricia Slowiak of Batavia, William (Anne) Burton of Florida, and James (DeeDee) Burton of Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Joe Slowiak; sister-in-law Bonnie Steele; his parents, and loving wife Betty (Betts).
